Marrakech Studio Week

A week for the makers: craft workshops, riad mornings, and the desert on the last two nights.

North AfricaCreatorsCraft

· 7 days

Rooftops of the medina at golden hour

This one is weighted towards the creators in the community. Marrakech has an unbroken line of craft going back centuries and a contemporary design scene that takes it seriously rather than decoratively.

We work from a riad in the mornings, spend the afternoons with the people who make things here (tanners, weavers, ceramicists, a furniture studio doing remarkable work) and finish with two nights in the Agafay desert.

It sold out in nine days. The waitlist moves more often than you'd think.

The experience

Craft, at close range.

Time with people who have spent decades getting good at one thing.

  • 01

    The riad

We take a whole one. Working mornings on the roof, courtyard for everything else.

  • 02

    In the workshops

Ceramics, weaving, leather and metal: hands on, with makers who have run these workshops for generations.

  • 03

    Contemporary design

Studio visits with the designers and architects reinterpreting all of it for now.

  • 04

    Two nights in Agafay

Desert camp, no signal, and the clearest sky most of the group will have seen.

Day by day

The itinerary.

A rough shape rather than a schedule. The useful parts of a trip rarely happen on time.

  1. Day 1

    Medina

    Into the medina

Transfers to the riad, orientation walk as the light goes, opening dinner on the roof.

  2. Day 2

    Working morning, ceramics after

Session on the roof, then across to a ceramics workshop for the afternoon.

  3. Day 3

    Textiles and leather

Weavers in the morning, the tanneries after lunch. Not for the squeamish, and unforgettable.

  4. Day 4

    Gueliz

    Contemporary studios

Furniture, architecture and product studios in Gueliz. Evening open, because the medina is best without a plan.

  5. Day 5

    Agafay

    Out to Agafay

Drive to the desert camp after a slow morning. Nothing scheduled once we arrive.

  6. Day 6

    Agafay

    Desert day

Walk at dawn for those who want it, then a genuinely empty day. Final dinner under the sky.

  7. Day 7

    Return and departures

Back to Marrakech mid-morning for afternoon flights.
